K98 Brown Leather Sling with Frog – carrying sling for the Karabiner 98k
The brown leather sling for the Karabiner 98k was an essential carrying accessory for the most widely issued German service rifle of the Second World War. The Karabiner 98k, commonly abbreviated K98k, was a bolt-action rifle chambered for 7.92×57 mm Mauser, used by infantry, support troops, security units and many other German formations.
Made from strong brown leather, the sling allowed the rifle to be carried over the shoulder, across the body or in marching position. Leather provided tensile strength, flexibility and durability, supporting the weight of the rifle and withstanding movement, friction and repeated field use. With age and handling, brown leather could darken, polish at contact points and develop creases around adjustment holes and bends.
The included frog, known in German more precisely as the Koppelschuh, was a key part of the K98k sling system. This small leather retaining piece secured the sling through the side slot in the rifle stock, preventing it from slipping or loosening during carry. Together with the buckle and adjustment holes, it allowed the sling to be set to the correct length and held firmly in place.
From a technical standpoint, the K98k sling differs from simpler rifle slings because it works with the distinctive sling slot built into the Karabiner 98k stock. The front end attaches to the forward sling point, while the rear section passes through the stock and is locked with the frog. This arrangement kept the rifle close to the body and reduced loose movement while marching.
The brown leather finish is consistent with many early or unblackened leather equipment items. Historical examples could vary in length, leather thickness, colour shade, buckle style, markings, stitching and the shape of the frog.
Collector’s note: the small leather frog is often overlooked, but it is essential to the K98k sling system. Without it, the sling is not properly secured through the stock slot, making the rifle less stable to carry and leaving the characteristic Karabiner 98k attachment method incomplete.
