German M35 Map Case – Meldetasche 35 for field documents and maps

The German M35 map case, known in German as the Meldetasche 35, was a leather field case designed to carry maps, written orders, reports, service documents and small navigation or writing tools. Although commonly called a map case, its German name points to a broader function connected with messages, reports and field paperwork.

The case was made from sturdy leather, with a rectangular body, closing flap, strong stitching and rear belt loops or attachment points. Inside, it could include compartments, slots and holders for folded maps, notebooks, pencils, rulers, erasers, compass or other small field instruments. This layout allowed documents and tools to be kept organized and protected during field service.

The Meldetasche 35 was used by officers, NCOs, messengers, dispatch riders, staff personnel, artillery observers, engineers, signals troops and other personnel responsible for orientation, written orders or communication between units. In field conditions, maps and documents needed to be accessible while also protected from wear, folding damage and dirt.

From a technical standpoint, the M35 case combined protection with organization. Leather gave the case a degree of stiffness, helping prevent maps and papers from being crushed or bent. Internal dividers separated writing tools, maps and documents, while the outer flap protected the contents from dust, mud and light moisture.

During the Second World War, map and message cases were important tools for command, navigation and field communication. The German Meldetasche 35 was built around a practical layout: rigid leather body, organized internal compartments, writing-tool holders and secure carrying points. Variants could differ in leather colour, closure style, stitching, internal arrangement, shoulder strap and maker details.

Collector’s note: the term “map case” describes only part of the Meldetasche’s actual function. It could hold orders, reports, sketches, notes, writing tools and small navigation instruments as well as maps. In practice, it was a compact field document case rather than only a holder for folded maps.
