Straight Shovel Cover with Solid Back in black leather – carrier for the German straight Spaten

The straight shovel cover was part of the field equipment used to carry the German straight infantry shovel, known as the Spaten. This tool was one of the most important items in a soldier’s field kit. It was used for digging foxholes, shallow trenches, improvised positions, drainage channels and small earthworks required during field service.

The cover is made from strong black leather, a material suited to protecting the metal blade and withstanding constant friction against the belt, uniform and other equipment. The solid back construction covered more of the rear of the blade than open-back carriers, giving the cover a more rigid structure and better overall protection. Rear belt loops allowed it to be fixed to the equipment belt, keeping the shovel stable during marching and movement.

From a construction standpoint, the cover featured strong stitching, shaped edges and an opening fitted to the blade of the straight shovel. Leather was used because it could resist abrasion, pulling force and pressure from the metal tool. The fitted shape helped prevent excessive movement, while the cover also reduced direct contact between the blade and the uniform or other carried items.

During the Second World War, the individual shovel was an essential field tool. It was not only used for digging, but also for improving cover, draining water, preparing temporary shelters and adapting the ground to tactical needs. A solid cover was therefore necessary to carry the tool safely, protect the blade and keep it accessible as part of the soldier’s equipment.

The black leather version matches the dark leather commonly seen on German belt equipment, including holsters, ammunition pouches, straps and carriers. The solid back added stiffness and improved protection, making the cover suitable for prolonged field use and repeated movement.

Collector’s note: shovel covers can vary in back construction, leather colour, stitching, rivets and belt-loop arrangement. Solid back versions are especially recognizable because of their closed protective rear panel, distinguishing them from open-back or partially cut-out carriers.
