Helmet Decal - Luftwaffe Second Pattern

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the second-pattern Luftwaffe eagle, used on German helmets issued to personnel of the German air force during the Third Reich period. This later version gradually replaced the earlier Luftwaffe eagle pattern and is characterized by a more stylized and sharper graphic appearance.

The decal is intended for application on German M35, M40 and M42 steel helmets, according to the historical configurations used by the Luftwaffe. On M35 helmets, the double-decal arrangement was common, with the Luftwaffe eagle on one side and the national tricolour shield on the other. As wartime production evolved and regulations changed, the use of helmet decals was progressively reduced, eventually leading to helmets being issued without applied insignia.

Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.

Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
