WH/SS Medical Pouch in Black Leather – field bag for first-aid and dressing supplies
The WH/SS medical pouch, known in German as a Sanitätstasche, was a field bag used to carry medical and first-aid supplies. It was intended for medical personnel, stretcher bearers, orderlies and first-aid assistants serving within the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS.
Made from strong black leather, the pouch protected its contents from impact, friction, dust and daily field wear. The leather construction gave the bag more stiffness than a simple fabric pouch, helping keep tools, dressings and small containers organized. The closing flap covered the opening, while rear loops allowed attachment to the belt or field equipment.
The pouch was designed to keep essential medical items organized and quickly accessible. Its contents could include bandages, gauze, dressing packets, compresses, scissors, tweezers, ties, small bottles, disinfectants and other emergency treatment accessories. In field conditions, rapid access to these items was important for treating bleeding, cuts, abrasions or minor wounds before the casualty could be moved to a dressing station or more organized medical post.
German medical personnel worked in many environments: forward positions, casualty collection points, mobile units, defensive lines, field hospitals and evacuation routes. A compact Sanitätstasche allowed a basic medical load to be carried directly with the individual, ready for immediate use before evacuation or further treatment.
From a technical standpoint, a field medical pouch had to balance capacity, quick access and stable carrying. Black leather resisted pulling force at the loops and straps and offered better protection for rigid or metal tools. Variants could differ in size, internal layout, closure type, markings, straps, loops and reinforcement details.
The WH/SS designation refers to association with Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS use rather than a single medical branch. In both contexts, medical pouches were necessary for carrying a portable set of dressings and basic treatment tools.
Collector’s note: black leather gave the Sanitätstasche a more rigid and protective structure than a plain canvas pouch. This was useful for small metal tools, bottles or containers that needed to remain separated and better protected from impact during transport.
