The brown leather K98 bayonet frog with strap was a field equipment accessory used to carry the Seitengewehr 84/98, the bayonet most commonly associated with the German Karabiner 98k. In German terminology, such a carrier is known as a Seitengewehrtasche or Koppelschuh, describing its function as the suspension piece for the bayonet scabbard on the belt.

Made from strong brown leather, the frog was designed to support the weight of the metal scabbard and bayonet while resisting friction and pulling force. The upper belt loop passed over the equipment belt, while the lower opening held the scabbard’s suspension stud. The additional securing strap helped keep the scabbard more stable, reducing movement during marching, field service and rapid movement.

The Seitengewehr 84/98 was carried at the side of the body in its steel scabbard. Even as bayonet use in direct combat became less frequent, the bayonet remained part of the soldier’s issued equipment. The frog integrated it into the belt kit alongside ammunition pouches, shovel, bread bag, canteen and other field accessories.

From a construction standpoint, the bayonet frog had to be simple but durable. Reinforced stitching, a shaped opening for the scabbard stud and the securing strap were key features. Brown leather could darken with use, polish at contact points and develop creases around the belt loop, strap and suspension opening.

The brown leather finish is consistent with many earlier or unblackened leather equipment items. Historical examples could vary in leather thickness, loop shape, strap design, stitching, rivets, colour and maker markings.

Collector’s note: the additional strap was not merely decorative. It helped hold the scabbard closer to the frog and reduced sideways movement, especially during marching or activity where the bayonet could strike the uniform, shovel, bread bag or other equipment.
