MG 34/42 Tool Pouch in Black Leather – tool and spare-parts carrier for the machine gun

The MG 34/42 tool pouch was part of the support equipment used with the German MG 34 and MG 42 machine guns. These weapons required tools and small spare parts for cleaning, maintenance, inspection of moving components and quick field adjustments. The pouch kept these items together, protected and ready for use.

Made from strong black leather, the pouch had a compact body with a closing flap, reinforced stitching and rear loops for attachment to the belt or field equipment. Leather protected the contents from impact, dust and abrasion, while the firm structure helped hold metal tools, small components and accessories securely.

The MG 34 and MG 42 were among the most important German machine guns of the Second World War. The MG 34 was a finely made weapon usable on bipod, tripod, vehicles and fixed mounts. The later MG 42 simplified production and became known for its extremely high rate of fire. Both weapons required regular maintenance, especially in dust, mud, cold weather or prolonged firing conditions.

The pouch could contain disassembly or adjustment tools, small spare parts, an oiler, cleaning accessories or components needed for the operation of the machine gun. For the gun crew, such a pouch was useful because stoppages, checks and minor maintenance often had to be handled directly in the field.

From a construction standpoint, the tool pouch followed the logic of specialized field equipment: compact size, durable material, secure closure and attachment points for carrying with the rest of the load. The black leather colour matched many other German leather equipment pieces, including holsters, straps, loops and carriers.

Collector’s note: a machine-gun crew carried far more than the weapon and ammunition. Spare barrels, belts, ammunition boxes, tools, cleaning gear and spare parts formed the complete weapon system. A small tool pouch could therefore be essential for keeping the MG operational during extended field use.
