Water-transfer helmet decal for the LVF, Légion des Volontaires Français. Soak in water for about one minute, slide it from the backing paper onto the helmet and let it dry. For added protection, a clear brush-on coating may be applied, but it is not mandatory.

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the shield of the LVF, the Légion des Volontaires Français, a formation composed of French volunteers employed during the Second World War on the Eastern Front within the German military apparatus.
The LVF was formed in 1941 and was incorporated into the German Army as a foreign volunteer formation. Its best-known German designation was Infanterie-Regiment 638, used in connection with its operational deployment on the Eastern Front. Because of its French composition, specific insignia were important for identifying the national origin of its personnel within German military structures.
The LVF helmet decal reflects this identity through a shield associated with the French volunteers. Unlike the standard decals of the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Polizei or SS, this type of insignia belongs to the category of markings linked to foreign formations, where national identification played an important role alongside military incorporation.
Helmets associated with the LVF could show different configurations depending on period, unit, available equipment and the method of applying insignia. The LVF decal therefore represents a specific marking connected with French volunteer personnel and their particular position within the German military system during the conflict.
As the war progressed, French volunteer personnel underwent several reorganizations, with some elements later moving into formations connected with the Waffen-SS. The LVF, however, remains a distinct and earlier phase, with its own historical and uniformological identity compared with later French SS configurations.
Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.
Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
