Waffen-SS Soldbuch – Second World War Pay Book and Identity Document

The Waffen-SS Soldbuch was the personal document issued to a member on active service. It functioned simultaneously as an administrative booklet, proof of entitlement to military pay and a service identity document. The holder was required to carry it and present it to the appropriate authorities when requested.

The booklet had a compact format suitable for carrying in the uniform and consisted of pre-printed paper pages enclosed by a card cover. Page count, internal arrangement, cover colour and wording changed between editions and production periods. Various versions bore the title “SS-Soldbuch zugleich Personalausweis,” together with the official devices prescribed for that edition.

Information was entered by hand or typewriter and validated with signatures, administrative stamps and unit seals. Official entries could only be completed by authorised offices and responsible personnel. In editions and periods requiring a portrait, the holder’s photograph was attached inside the cover and authenticated with an official stamp extending partly across its edge.

The opening sections generally recorded the holder’s surname and given name, date and place of birth, address, occupation, physical characteristics, signature and next-of-kin details. They could also contain the Soldbuch number, identity-disc number, blood group, issuing unit and rank according to SS terminology.

Service sections documented assigned units, transfers, promotions and administrative status. The recorded Soldgruppe, or pay group, determined the holder’s financial entitlement. The Soldbuch also certified his right to collect outstanding pay from an authorised pay office when it had not been issued by his own unit.

Separate sections recorded clothing and equipment placed in the holder’s custody. Entries could cover uniform garments, footwear, field equipment, personal weapons, gas mask and other issued articles. They documented the issue, return, replacement and supplementation of military equipment during service.

Medical information could include vaccinations, examinations, spectacle prescriptions, dental treatment and admissions to military hospitals or Lazarette. Additional pages were provided for leave, allowances, decorations, combat badges, officially recognised wounds and other administrative entries.

When the holder changed unit or rank, superseded information was frequently crossed out but left legible and replaced with a new entry. The resulting sequence of stamps, dates, signatures and corrections could document successive stages of service, including assignments to field, training, replacement and hospital units.

The Waffen-SS was the armed component of the SS and developed from formations including the SS-Verfügungstruppeand SS-Totenkopfverbände. Its expansion produced divisions and units containing German and Germanic personnel, together with volunteers and conscripts of numerous other nationalities. This development is reflected in differing unit titles, stamps, abbreviations and foreign-language personal details.

The cover alone cannot establish the holder’s unit or service history. Identification depends principally upon the internal entries, unit stamps, military postal numbers, administrative abbreviations and chronological sequence of amendments.
