More info

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the second-pattern Heer eagle, composed of an eagle with outstretched wings and central swastika on a black shield. This insignia was used on helmets of the German Army and was one of the most recognizable identifying elements of German combat equipment of the period.

The Heer decal was applied to German steel helmets issued to Army personnel, particularly on the M35, M40 and M42models, according to the different production and regulation phases. The insignia identified affiliation with the Heer and distinguished it from other branches and organizations such as the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Polizei, SS and paramilitary formations.

The term “second pattern” refers to the graphic variant of the decal, not to the helmet model. This version has a sharper and more stylized appearance than earlier configurations, with clearer rendering of the shield, eagle and central swastika. The proportions of the eagle, the shape of the shield and the black background make this type especially recognizable among German helmet decals.

During the Second World War, the use of decals on German helmets changed several times, due both to official regulations and to production simplification. Early helmets often featured more carefully executed and clearly visible insignia, while later wartime production moved toward more simplified solutions, until applied decals were progressively reduced or omitted entirely.

Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.

Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
