Water-transfer helmet decal representing the French tricolour shield associated with French volunteers incorporated into or connected with SS formations during the Second World War. This decal does not depict SS runes, but a French national shield used to identify the volunteer’s origin.

National shields for foreign volunteers had a different function from standard German helmet decals. While Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Polizei or SS insignia identified a branch, organization or formation, national shields mainly indicated the origin of personnel serving within foreign volunteer formations incorporated into the German military system.

In the case of French volunteers, the tricolour shield directly referred to the national colours of France and visually distinguished French personnel from other foreign contingents, such as Flemish, Walloon, Dutch, Spanish or Scandinavian volunteers. When applied to the helmet, the shield formed part of the national identification system used for certain volunteer units.

This decal is connected with helmet configurations associated with French volunteers in SS formations, particularly during the later stages of the reorganization of French units and the incorporation of part of the personnel into structures linked to the Waffen-SS. The best-known designation in this context is Charlemagne, associated with French SS formations in the final phase of the war.

The French tricolour shield decal should be distinguished from SS rune decals, including variants with silver shield or other graphic layouts. In this case, the main element is not the SS symbol, but French national identification rendered through the shield in the colours of the French flag.

This decal is intended for application on German M35, M40 and M42 steel helmets, according to configurations associated with French volunteers in SS formations. Like other helmet decals for foreign volunteers, it represents a specific marking connected with the personnel’s origin and their incorporation into non-German units within the German military system.

Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.

Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
