More info

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the shield with central swastika used on helmets of the SA-Standarte Feldherrnhalle, a formation connected with the Sturmabteilung and characterized by its own specific symbolism, distinct from the standard insignia of the German armed forces.

SA Feldherrnhalle helmets were generally configured with two side decals: one side carried the shield with central swastika, while the opposite side carried the Feldherrnhalle shield with the architectural reference to the Feldherrnhalle in Munich and the SA symbol. In the most commonly indicated arrangement, the shield with swastika was applied to the wearer’s left side, while the Feldherrnhalle decal was placed on the opposite side. Inverted configurations are also known, connected with variants, reissued helmets or different applications.

The Feldherrnhalle in Munich, a monumental building located on Odeonsplatz, acquired strong symbolic importance within the regime’s political imagery after the events of November 1923. The adoption of a specific Feldherrnhalle insignia by certain SA formations reflected this commemorative and political association.

The shield-and-swastika decal therefore belongs to the distinctive double-decal configuration of SA Feldherrnhalle helmets and should not be confused with the opposite Feldherrnhalle decal, which depicts the building and the SA symbol. It represents one of the more recognizable variants among German paramilitary helmet markings of the pre-war period and the early years of the conflict.

Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.

Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
