Water-transfer helmet decal for French volunteers in the SS, with silver shield. Soak in water for about one minute, slide it from the backing paper onto the helmet and let it dry. For added protection, a clear brush-on coating may be applied, but it is not mandatory.

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the SS shield for French volunteers, characterized by the silver background of the shield. This type of insignia is connected with French volunteer formations incorporated into or associated with the German military apparatus during the Second World War, particularly within the context of foreign volunteer units linked to the Waffen-SS.
The helmet shield for French volunteers served as a form of national identification within foreign formations. Unlike standard SS decals based on runes or regular unit configurations, this type referred to the French origin of the personnel through a specific shield design. In this version, the silver background is the defining feature, distinguishing it from variants with different colours, borders or graphic layouts.
The reference to French volunteers belongs to the complex history of foreign units employed by Germany during the conflict. After the early French volunteer formations and later reorganizations, part of the French personnel was progressively incorporated into structures connected with the Waffen-SS, leading eventually to formations best known under the name Charlemagne. National insignia applied to uniforms, sleeve shields and helmets helped preserve a visible distinction of origin within a broader military system.
The main feature of this decal is the silver shield, which differentiates it from other foreign volunteer decals or national shields with coloured backgrounds. The metallic or silver-toned field gave the shield a sharper contrast on the helmet surface, making the insignia clearly recognizable compared with standard German decals of the Heer, Luftwaffe, Polizei or regular SS configurations.
This decal is intended for application on German M35, M40 and M42 steel helmets, according to configurations associated with French volunteers in SS formations. As with other helmet decals used by foreign volunteer units, its primary function was to indicate a specific affiliation within the German military organization, combining SS symbolism with the national identification of the volunteer.
Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.
Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
