More info

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the SS runic shield, one of the most distinctive insignia used on helmets associated with the SS and Waffen-SS. The classic design features the two stylized SS runes on a light or silver-coloured shield, creating a distinctive appearance clearly different from the helmet insignia of other German armed forces.

In the standard configuration, the SS runic shield was applied to the wearer's right side of the helmet. This placement is an important distinction from organizations such as the Heer and Luftwaffe, whose principal helmet insignia were normally positioned on the left side.

On early helmets, particularly double-decal M35 configurations, the SS runic shield on the right could be paired with the Party shield on the wearer's left side, featuring a red field and central swastika. The two decals therefore served different purposes: the runic shield identified SS affiliation, while the opposite shield represented the associated Party emblem.

As wartime regulations and production evolved, double-decal configurations became progressively less common. Helmets with a single SS runic decal on the right side are therefore frequently encountered, particularly among M40 and M42 configurations, before applied helmet decals were eventually discontinued.

Much rarer special configurations are also known, including reverse-decal helmets, where the SS runes were applied to the left side, and examples carrying runic shields on both sides. Such variants are generally associated with reissued helmets, conversions, field applications or particular units and should not be considered the standard Waffen-SS arrangement.

SS helmet decals also exist in several graphic variants, with differences in shield shape, rune proportions and overall design depending on the helmet manufacturer and production period. These details are important elements in the historical and uniformological classification of SS helmets.

Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, then carefully slid from the backing paper onto the helmet surface, correctly positioned and left to dry completely.

For additional protection, a thin clear protective coating applied with a brush may be added after drying. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the decal when the helmet is frequently handled or kept on display.
