Unofficial commemorative cross issued after World War I for the 3rd Italian Army. Gilt bronze with white enamel arms, featuring the Lion of Saint Mark with open book and the legend “A ricordo e riconoscenza” (“In memory and gratitude”). A tribute to the veterans of the “Invincible Army”.

The Commemorative Cross of the 3rd Army was created after 1918 as an unofficial decoration for the veterans of the Italian 3rd Army, commanded by the Duke of Aosta. Produced privately in various forms, it is usually made of gilt bronze with white enamelled arms and a central Lion of Saint Mark holding an open book, the traditional symbol of peace and Venice.
The reverse bears the inscription “A ricordo e riconoscenza” (“In memory and gratitude”), often surrounded by decorative rays or floral patterns depending on the manufacturer.
Although not an official military award, it became a highly respected emblem among former soldiers of the so-called “Invincible Army.” The cross was worn on a light blue ribbon with red edges, echoing the colours of the Italian Army. It stands today as a symbol of remembrance and unity among the veterans of the Great War.
