The cap badge for Skijäger der Gebirgstruppe, the ski troops of the German Army mountain branch, was a distinctive insignia associated with soldiers trained for movement and combat in snow-covered, mountainous and difficult terrain. It was worn on field headgear, particularly the M43 field cap, as well as on related caps used by mountain and light infantry formations.

The design combines two symbolic elements: the oak-leaf branch associated with the Jäger troops and a superimposed ski, indicating winter and mountain specialization. The oak leaves refer to the tradition of light infantry, mobility and field service, while the ski identifies the wearer with units trained for snow movement, alpine operations and winter warfare.

The Skijäger were intended for operations in terrain where ordinary infantry movement was restricted by snow, cold, steep gradients and poor communications. Their training included skiing, movement across snow, orientation in mountainous regions, winter fieldcraft and combat under harsh climatic conditions. These skills made them particularly suited to reconnaissance, patrol duties, mobile infantry actions and operations in high-altitude or winter environments.

From a construction point of view, these badges could vary depending on origin and production method. Some examples are known as front-made pieces, often with a separately made or hand-applied ski mounted on the Jäger oak-leaf branch and rear fastening by splints. This type of construction reflects the practical and sometimes improvised nature of specialist insignia produced or assembled close to the units that used them.

In uniform study, the badge belongs to the specialized insignia of the Gebirgstruppe. While the edelweiss was the broader and more widely recognized emblem of the mountain troops, the ski motif identified a more specific role: soldiers trained to operate in snow, in mountain terrain and under winter conditions, where mobility and adaptation to the environment were essential.
