Trench Art Bracelet Made from SS Dagger Chain Elements

This Trench Art bracelet is formed from a sequence of rectangular links displaying alternating Totenkopf skulls and SS runes, derived from the distinctive suspension chain used with the SS chained dagger introduced in 1936.

The original chain formed part of the dagger suspension system, connecting the scabbard fittings to the attachment worn on the belt or uniform. Its metal links alternated between the skull and crossbones motif and the double SS runes, producing one of the most recognisable suspension systems associated with German edged weapons of the period.

On the bracelet, these elements are instead joined into a continuous sequence shaped around the wrist. It is therefore a non-official and non-regulation object, belonging to the broader tradition of Trench Art, in which military materials, components or motifs were reused or reinterpreted as personal objects and souvenirs.

The Totenkopf and runes serve no official rank or organisational function on the bracelet; they reproduce the decorative language of the original dagger suspension chain.

A lesser-known detail concerns the construction of the original SS dagger chain: it was not simply a symmetrical row of identical decorative links. The suspension consisted of two chain sections of different lengths, attached to separate points on the scabbard and incorporating a specific arrangement of skull and rune links. The bracelet therefore retains the visual language of the original suspension while completely transforming its original mechanical purpose.
