K98 sight hood, metal front sight protector for the Karabiner 98k. Mounted over the front sight base, it shields the sight from knocks, dirt and damage while completing the historical appearance of the rifle.

Mounted at the front of the Karabiner 98k, the Sight Hood was a small metal accessory designed to protect the rifle’s front sight. The K98k, adopted in 1935, became the standard German service rifle of the Second World War, and small components like the sight hood are important for giving the rifle its correct historical profile.
The sight hood slides over the front sight base, protecting the sight blade from the sides while keeping the sight picture open. Its purpose was to shield the front sight from impact, dirt, debris and accidental bending, especially during transport, field movement and general handling. Modern reproductions are usually made from steel, often with a blued or black finish, and follow the spring-like shaped construction of the wartime component. Specialist discussions note that the hood fits into dedicated slots on the front sight base, and that incorrect removal or installation can leave marks on those mounting slots.
From a collecting and display perspective, the sight hood is a small but very noticeable part. A K98 without it can look unfinished at the front; with the hood fitted, the rifle regains a more complete and historically consistent silhouette. It is therefore a useful accessory for replicas, deactivated rifles, display pieces, reenactment setups, mannequins and uniform presentations.
One interesting detail concerns post-war refurbished K98 rifles, especially those often called Russian Capture rifles. Several collector and retailer sources note that many of these rifles had their sight hoods removed during refurbishment, along with other small parts such as locking screws and cleaning rods. For this reason, the sight hood is often sought today as a simple but important finishing part.
Curiosity: some K98 sight hoods are also described as fitting other German or related rifles, including G43/K43, but compatibility depends on the exact front sight base. For that reason, shape, spring tension and precise slot engagement are key details in a well-made reproduction.
