Luftwaffe Tropical Breast Eagle – Sand Backing

The Luftwaffe tropical breast eagle was a version of the German Air Force national emblem specifically produced for tropical clothing during the Second World War.

It was worn on the right breast and depicted the characteristic Luftwaffe eagle in flight, clutching a swastika in its talons. Unlike insignia used on standard blue-grey continental uniforms, the tropical version employed colours and materials better suited to the lighter clothing developed for hot climates.

Typical examples were machine embroidered in light grey, silver-grey or off-white thread on a sand or tan textile backing. This allowed the insignia to blend with the lightweight cotton fabric of tropical field uniforms rather than creating the strong contrast of the standard blue-grey Luftwaffe backing.

These insignia were worn by Luftwaffe personnel serving in North Africa, including flying, anti-aircraft, ground, supply and support formations operating alongside German and Italian land forces. Tropical clothing, however, was not restricted solely to service on the African continent.

A lesser-known detail is that the Luftwaffe tropical uniform was not exclusively an “Afrika” uniform. Although developed in connection with operations in North Africa, its authorised use was later extended to personnel serving during the warmer months in southern areas of Europe and the Mediterranean theatre. A sand-backed tropical eagle therefore does not necessarily indicate service with the Afrika Korps, or even service in Africa itself.
