Water-transfer helmet decal with national tricolour shield. Soak in water for about one minute, slide it from the backing paper onto the helmet and let it dry. For added protection, a clear brush-on coating may be applied, but it is not mandatory.

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the national tricolour shield, one of the most recognizable side insignia applied to German steel helmets during the Third Reich period. The shield, composed of the national colours black, white and red, was generally used together with the branch or organization insignia.
On early German helmet configurations, especially the M35 model, the double-decal arrangement was common: one side carried the insignia of the relevant branch or formation, such as the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Polizei or other organizations, while the opposite side carried the national tricolour shield. This layout combined branch identification with the national emblem.
As the war progressed and production was progressively simplified, the use of the national shield was gradually reduced. Later regulations led to the disappearance of the double-decal configuration; many helmets were produced with a single decal or eventually without applied decals, especially on later wartime models such as the M40 and M42.
The national tricolour shield decal is therefore mainly associated with early and intermediate German helmet configurations, particularly double-decal examples. It represents an important detail for understanding the uniformological and production evolution of German helmets between the 1930s and the Second World War.
Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.
Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
