The Bakelite K98 Bayonet Grips – Brown are replacement components for the handle of the German bayonet commonly associated with the Karabiner 98k. In collector terminology it is often called the K98 bayonet, while the correct technical designation is Seitengewehr 84/98 III, the bayonet pattern used with the German service rifle adopted in 1935.

The grips form the two side panels of the bayonet handle. They are fitted to the tang and secured with screws or rivets, depending on the specific configuration. Their function is both practical and structural: they cover the metal core of the handle, improve handling and complete the external profile of the grip.

Bakelite was one of the early thermosetting plastics widely used in the twentieth century for technical, electrical and military components. On Seitengewehr 84/98 III bayonets, grip panels can be found in both wood and synthetic materials. Brown Bakelite grips provide a uniform surface while giving the handle a warmer and more traditional appearance than black versions.

The brown finish visually recalls some historical grip materials while remaining distinct from the natural grain of wood. These grips are suitable for replacing missing, broken or heavily worn panels, or for completing a bayonet that no longer has its original side plates. Once fitted, they help restore the correct outline of the handle and improve the visual coherence of the piece.

A notable technical detail concerns the color variation of synthetic grips. Depending on material mixture, production and ageing, Bakelite can appear in shades ranging from light brown to very dark brown. For this reason, the color of the grip panels can also contribute to the visual and technical reading of a K98 bayonet.
