Diamond-shaped emblem for the grip of the Hitler Youth knife (HJ-Fahrtenmesser), in the characteristic red, white and black colours. The emblem was recessed into the grip scale and secured by two bendable retaining tabs on the reverse.

The Hitler Youth grip diamond was one of the most recognisable components of the HJ-Fahrtenmesser, the service knife associated with the Hitler Youth.
Its design used the familiar HJ diamond in red, white and black with a central swastika, but its construction differed from the standard membership badge. Rather than being intended for wear on clothing, this version was specifically made to be set into the grip scale of the knife.
The reverse carried two metal retaining tabs or prongs. These passed through corresponding openings in the grip scale and were then bent over, securing the emblem within its recessed position without the use of an external screw or visible fastening.
The diamond was normally fitted into the characteristic black grip scale, becoming an integral part of the visual identity of the HJ knife.
The HJ-Fahrtenmesser was introduced during the early 1930s and underwent a number of production and standardisation changes over time. Variations can be found in blade construction, markings, grip scales and the grip emblems themselves.
A lesser-known detail is the collector term “wiggle test”: on many original knives the grip diamond can display a very slight amount of movement within the scale as a consequence of its two-tab mounting system. Although this is sometimes regarded as an authenticity clue, it is not conclusive on its own, since genuine examples can also have completely tight-fitting diamonds.
