The Walther P38 was one of the most important military semi-automatic pistols of World War II. Developed during the second half of the 1930s as a more modern and economical replacement for the complex Luger P08, it was adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1938 as Germany's new service pistol.

Its final design followed several stages of development intended to produce a reliable military handgun that could be manufactured more efficiently and economically than the P08. Designs including the Armee Pistole (AP) and later Heeres Pistole (HP) ultimately led to the P38.

The original pistol was chambered for 9 × 19 mm Parabellum and fed from a detachable single-stack 8-round magazine. One of its most significant features was its double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger system. With a cartridge already chambered, the first shot could be fired by simply pulling the trigger without manually cocking the hammer.

The P38 also incorporated a safety with a decocking function, allowing the hammer to be lowered safely with a round chambered. The first shot could then be fired in double action.

Another distinctive feature was its vertically tilting locking block, used in conjunction with a short-recoil operating system. Its notably open-top slide also gave the P38 a highly recognizable appearance.

Full-scale production began in 1940. As wartime demand increased, manufacturing expanded beyond the original factory to include Mauser and Spreewerk. More than 1.2 million P38 pistols were produced during World War II.

Although the P38 was intended to replace the Luger P08, both pistols remained in service alongside one another for several years. The P38 was nevertheless considerably better suited to mass production because it required fewer expensive precision-machining operations.

The design survived the end of World War II. It was later developed into the Walther P1, distinguished primarily by its lighter aluminium-alloy frame, and the P38/P1 family remained in West German service for decades.

This inert replica reproduces the external configuration of the P38 with a predominantly metal construction and black plastic grip panels. Its movable mechanism simulates loading and trigger operation, while the replica's magazine is fixed and cannot be removed.

It measures 24 cm in overall length and weighs approximately 710 g.

Collector's note: several concepts introduced by the P38 survived long after the pistol itself. Its combination of DA/SA operation, decocking system and tilting locking block influenced later service handguns, while an evolved form of its locking principle can be seen in the Beretta 92 family.
