More info

The Luger P08, officially designated Pistole 08, is one of the most famous and instantly recognizable semi-automatic pistols of the 20th century. Adopted by the Imperial German Army in 1908, it became one of Germany's principal service handguns during World War I and remained in use during World War II.

Its origins lie in the work of Georg Luger, who substantially redesigned the earlier Borchardt C93 during the late 19th century. The resulting Parabellum pistol was more compact and ergonomic while retaining the distinctive articulated locking system. Early Parabellum pistols entered production around 1900, initially chambered for 7.65 × 21 mm Parabellum.

German military adoption occurred gradually. The Imperial German Navy selected its own version in 1904, while the Army formally adopted the Pistole 08 in 1908, giving the P08 its familiar designation.

The standard military pistol was chambered for 9 × 19 mm Parabellum and fed from a detachable 8-round magazinehoused inside the grip.

Its most distinctive mechanical feature was the famous toggle-lock action. During operation, the articulated arms above the receiver rose upwards in a characteristic movement that makes the Luger immediately identifiable even from its silhouette.

During World War I, P08 pistols were manufactured primarily by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and the government arsenal at Erfurt, and were issued in large numbers to German forces.

Several specialist variants accompanied the standard pistol. The earlier P04 Navy model used a longer barrel, while the Lange Pistole 08, commonly known as the Artillery Luger, featured a 200 mm barrel, adjustable sights and provision for a detachable shoulder stock.

Following World War I, the P08 remained in service with the Reichswehr and German police forces. Military production increased again during German rearmament in the 1930s, particularly at Mauser, and the pistol remained in service throughout World War II even after the introduction of the more modern Walther P38.

The P08 required numerous precision machining operations and was comparatively expensive to manufacture. This complexity contributed to its gradual replacement by more modern service pistols.

This inert replica features a distinctive aged and patinated finish, giving the metal surfaces a worn appearance. The main construction is metal, while the grip panels are made from black plastic.

The magazine is removable, and the movable mechanism simulates loading and trigger operation without being capable of firing projectiles. The replica measures 25.5 cm in overall length and weighs approximately 965 g.

Collector's note: although universally known today as the “Luger”, the pistol's original commercial name was Parabellum. The Luger name became so familiar in the United States after World War I that importer A. F. Stoeger registered it as a trademark to help market the pistols to American buyers.
