More info

Heer and SS Visor Caps & Uniforms, by Jan M. Meland and Trond A. Elvan, is a specialist reference work devoted to the study of German Heer and SS visor caps together with a selection of wartime uniforms.

The hardcover volume contains 230 pages and 736 high-quality colour photographs, documenting more than 50 visor caps: 43 Heer examples and 12 SS examples. It also includes 2 additional caps and a separate chapter presenting 9 complete Heer and SS uniforms.

Particular attention is given to Heer Schirmmützen representing the different branches, services and departments of the German Army. Detailed photographs record features including cloth, peaks, cap bands, cords, chinstraps, insignia, manufacturer markings, interior labels and construction methods.

An important section examines the various Waffenfarbe branch colours used in the piping of Heer visor caps. Known piping colours are photographed and compared, allowing closely related shades and their associated branches to be studied side by side.

The SS section documents several types of visor caps through detailed exterior and interior views, including construction features that are frequently important for identification. The uniforms are shown together with their collar insignia, shoulder boards, badges, decorations and tailoring details, providing a broader view of how individual components formed a complete uniform.

A lesser-known feature of the book is that the SS chapter includes a visor cap formerly belonging to a well-known SS general. The volume therefore contains not only comparative examples of different patterns, but also an item with specific historical provenance.
