The metal “G” shoulder board cyphers identified personnel belonging to the SS “Germania” Regiment, one of the principal formations of the SS-Verfügungstruppe during the pre-war and early wartime period.

This version features the characteristic Gothic “G”, representing the first pattern of the regimental cypher. The letter was mounted directly on the shoulder board and served as an unit identification device, separate from the insignia used to indicate rank.

The metal cyphers were fitted with rear prongs or tabs, which passed through the material of the shoulder board and were secured on the reverse. Their Gothic form reflects the early style of unit insignia used by the SS-Verfügungstruppe.

As SS uniform insignia became increasingly standardised, Gothic unit lettering was replaced by simpler Latin or block-style characters. The Gothic “G” is therefore characteristic of the earlier period of the regiment’s history.

The SS “Germania” Regiment played an important role in the development of the armed SS formations. After serving within the SS-Verfügungs-Division, it was later incorporated into the formation that became the SS Division “Wiking”.

A lesser-known detail is that the Gothic form of the “G” represents more than a stylistic variation: it belongs to a distinct early phase in the regiment’s history, before the increasing standardisation of Waffen-SS unit insignia and organisational structures.
