Gold cap cords for generals’ visor caps, made from braided gold-coloured cord for German Schirmmützen. Fitted above the visor and attached to the side buttons, they replaced the ordinary chinstrap or silver officer cord and visually marked the cap as belonging to a general officer.

Gold Cap Cords for Generals’ Visor Caps – Schirmmütze Mützenkordel
The gold cap cord for generals’ visor caps was a distinctive rank detail used on German Schirmmützen, the formal peaked visor caps worn with military uniforms. Positioned across the front of the cap above the visor, the cord was attached to the side buttons and formed one of the most visible indicators of general officer rank.
The gold colour distinguished generals’ caps from those of other officers, which commonly used silver-coloured cords, or from lower ranks fitted with simpler chinstraps. On a visor cap, this detail had an immediate visual function: it emphasized status, rank and the more formal character of the cap.
The cord was made from braided gold-coloured strands, giving it flexibility, thickness and a bright woven surface. Its ends were shaped for attachment to the buttons on each side of the cap. The cord had to follow the curved front line of the visor cap, sitting securely above the peak without hanging too loosely or appearing overly stretched.
Gold cords were used on the visor caps of generals across different branches and services, together with other cap features such as the eagle, cockade, branch piping, buttons and embroidered or metal insignia. These elements formed part of a highly structured uniform system in which colour, material and placement helped identify rank and service.
In German uniform tradition, the visor cap was not only a practical headgear item but also a coded part of the uniform. Fabric, piping, insignia, buttons and cords all contributed to the identification of the wearer. For general officers, the gold cap cord was therefore an essential visual component of the Schirmmütze.
Collector’s note: the contrast between gold general officer cords and silver officer cords is one of the clearest identifying features on German visor caps. Small differences in gold tone, braid thickness, end shape and cord tension can noticeably change the final appearance of the cap.
