Non-regulation medal associated with the Legione Autonoma Mobile “Ettore Muti” of Milan, featuring the unit emblem and a large integral suspension loop. This type is not documented among known regulation insignia and may represent a private, prototype or later veterans’ production.

Unusual medal or medallion associated with the Legione Autonoma Mobile “Ettore Muti” of Milan, a formation of the Italian Social Republic officially established in March 1944.
The obverse bears the circular inscription “LEGIONE AUTONOMA MOBILE ETTORE MUTI – MILANO”. At the centre, within a shield, appears the characteristic emblem of the unit: the Republican fasces superimposed over two crossed daggers, a device closely associated with the Legion and also found on its better-known uniform insignia.
One of the most interesting aspects of this piece is its construction. The completely circular shape and especially the large rectangular integral suspension loop at the top differ considerably from the better-documented badges and insignia associated with the “Ettore Muti”.
No officially instituted decoration of the Legion in this exact configuration is currently known. Its classification should therefore remain cautious. The piece may represent a privately produced item, an experimental or prototype design that was never officially adopted, or a post-war veterans’ or commemorative piece incorporating the historical symbolism of the unit.
In the absence of specific contemporary documentation, neither its exact date nor its original intended purpose can currently be established with certainty.
Historical curiosity: alongside the official insignia of the Legion, a number of privately produced rings, bracelets, identification plaques and other personal items are also known, some displaying considerable variation from standardized patterns. The existence of these private objects makes non-regulation pieces entirely plausible, although it does not by itself prove that this particular medallion dates from 1944-1945.
An unusual piece of particular interest for the study of the symbolism and non-regulation insignia associated with the “Ettore Muti” Legion, whose precise origin remains to be established.
