More info

WW1 German Bavarian Pickelhaube, a spiked helmet originally introduced in the 19th century and widely adopted by German forces, including those of the Kingdom of Bavaria. It remained in use during the early stages of the First World War before being gradually replaced by steel helmets.

Constructed from hardened leather, the helmet features a rounded shell with front and rear visors, providing basic protection and structural integrity. Its most distinctive feature is the metal spike mounted on top, which gives the Pickelhaube its name.

The front is fitted with a Bavarian state plate, identifying the unit’s regional affiliation within the German military structure. Additional components include metal fittings, side cockades, and a chin strap, completing the helmet’s configuration.

As the war progressed, the limitations of leather construction led to the adoption of more protective steel helmets. Despite this, the Pickelhaube remains an enduring symbol of German military heritage.

It represents a key stage in the transition from traditional to modern military headgear.
