Water-transfer helmet decal for the Italian Smoke Troops in the Baltic. Soak in water for about one minute, slide it from the backing paper onto the helmet and let it dry. For added protection, a clear brush-on coating may be applied, but it is not mandatory.

Water-transfer helmet decal representing the insignia of the Italian Smoke Troops in the Baltic, units employed during the Second World War in the Baltic area between 1942 and 1945. These troops belonged to the Italian chemical and smoke-generating services, specialized in the creation of artificial smoke screens for concealment and protection.
The Italian Smoke Troops in the Baltic were organized into several battalions and an autonomous company, operating in a particularly specific theatre far from Italian territory. Their main role was the use of smoke-generating equipment and substances to conceal strategic targets such as ports, depots, installations and other sensitive areas from aerial observation and attack.
The helmet insignia associated with these units forms part of the symbolism of the Italian chemical and smoke troops, differing from the ordinary insignia used by infantry, artillery or other branches. When applied to the helmet, it identified the wearer’s branch or specialist unit according to Italian military practice of the period.
Water-transfer decals consist of a thin printed film applied to a paper backing. Before application, the decal should be immersed in water for about one minute, allowing the printed film to separate from the backing paper. The decorated layer is then carefully slid onto the helmet surface, aligned correctly and left to dry completely.
Once dry, the decal adheres to the helmet surface. To improve durability and protect the decoration from handling, dust or light rubbing, a thin clear protective coating may be applied with a brush. This step is optional, but it can help preserve the finish over time.
