Large privately produced commemorative badge based on the distinctive Gothic “G” of the SS “Germania” Regiment. The design derives from the metal shoulder board cyphers used by the SS-Verfügungstruppe and is presented here as a single breast-style badge.

This commemorative badge uses the distinctive Gothic “G” associated with the SS “Germania” Regiment, one of the principal formations of the early SS-Verfügungstruppe.
The original design was derived from metal shoulder board cyphers, which were attached to the uniform to identify the wearer’s regimental affiliation. In regulation use, the “G” therefore functioned as a unit designation rather than as an independent breast badge.
In this configuration the design is enlarged and presented as a single badge, placing it within the broader category of privately produced commemorative or tradition pieces in which established unit insignia were reinterpreted outside the formal uniform regulations.
The use of Gothic lettering reflects the earlier pattern associated with the “Germania” Regiment, before SS unit cyphers were progressively standardised into simpler Latin or block-letter forms.
A lesser-known detail concerns the original purpose of these Gothic cyphers: they were designed purely to identify the wearer’s unit and remained separate from the rank insignia of the shoulder board. Their strong and immediately recognisable visual identity also made individual unit letters particularly suitable for later private commemorative interpretations.
